What 7 years has taught me

I will have been with my fiance for 7 years come Valentine's Day. We are getting married later in the year as well. Not only have we been together for 7 years, but we have known each other for just over 12 years. We were friends for 5 years before getting together. In all of that time I have learned a few things about him and relationships. You can't change a bad habit: I won't embarrass the poor lad with his bad habits (though I have my fair share to be truthful), but in all the time I have known him I cannot get him to stop. I don't think I will ever change him and in reality I don't think I would want to. His bad habits are a part of him after all. Get a comfy mattress: We were so looking forward to sleeping next to each other when my mattress decided to die. It was so bad for my back that I ended up spending a month in another room away from him. Invest in a good mattress before you move out. It will save you so much in the relationship. Being friends ...

Things I learned about my fiance since living with him

It is said that you don't truly know another person until you live with them. I have spent a lot of time with le fiance before we moved in together but there are still some things about him that I didn't know or I have noticed since we moved in together. 1. He talks to himself... ...a lot! He is always mumbling away to himself. I think this is how he gets through the day. He explains processes to himself (e.g. what to cook when or what order to hoover the house). 2. He has his own jokes We will be sat watching TV or just walking down the street and then something pops into his head that makes him laugh. He will just randomly burst out laughing. 3. He has an evil sense of humour I never realised just how dark his humour could be until we started living together and I was exposed to it more during the day (well, weekends and evenings anyway). 4. His confidence has grown There is no way that he is the same person I knew before we moved in. The move out of his paren...

Date night

I worked out yesterday that I probably saw more of my fiance for general fun (not that you dirty people) than I do now. We see each other every day now but we are always doing something like housework or shopping. Stuff for the house seems to take up all our spare time together. When we are not doing stuff together he wants to go and play on his computer. I decided to implement something I thought was a little tacky at first...date night! I know other people have them and I always thought, before we were living together, that this was a tacky idea and I would not really want to do that. Now I see why they are so important. The sort of lives people live today make spending time with their partner really difficult. We are all connected to our jobs too much and we all spend too much time glued to our computers and mobiles. Even when we are in the same room we have the TV on and yet we are both on our separate mobiles flicking through Facebook or whatever. I decided that we would hav...

Modern Love Story

Image
The strangest thing has been happening lately. People have really taken an interest in how Dave and I got together. People also seem to think we are a lovely couple and this makes us both feel very happy and we would like to thank anyone who has said so. As a way of answering everyone at once I put together this YouTube video: If this is too long or you can't watch the video the brief story is this: We met in 2003 after starting work at a local supermarket and we became friends for the 5 years I was there. We both saw other people in that time but we were in contact all day every day. Then Dave set me up with one of his old college friends while he was with someone. Both those people tried their hardest to ruin our lives. Dave went through a break up and so did I. A few counselling sessions later on my part and with Dave's help I made it through my problems. Then I realised that Dave and I should be together all along. We had a chat on MSN Messenger (remember that?) an...

Solcialism and affiars

Two of the biggest stories of the week in Britain have been the Labour leadership election and the leaking of personal data from the hacking of Ashley Madison, the dating website that encourages people to have affairs. Depending on who you believe, and what stance your paper of choice takes politically, Jeremy Corbyn will either be good for Labour or bad. If you have been living under a rock for the past few months since the disastrous UK election (I am a Labour Party member so you would expect me to have this view), and I don't blame you if you have been living under a rock since then, you will be unaware that this election is taking place. There are four candidates in the running: Liz Kendall, Andy Burnham (who stood in 2010 when Ed Milliband won), Yvette Cooper and Jeremy Corbyn. There has been 'Corbyn mania' in the press. The right wing press seem to think that Corbyn will make the party un-electable and the left wing press think he is the greatest thing ever. Corby...

Why I won't be watching 50 Shades this weekend

Well apart from the fact that I have a lovely weekend away with my darling fiancé where we are meeting good friends and having a lovely time to celebrate our 6 years together (go us) I personally have no desire to see the film. Critics have not been particularly warm towards the film adaptation of 50 Shades of Grey, the film based on the inexplicably popular female masturbatory aid book. Without seeing the film I cannot comment on that, so I won't. My desire to leave the film unwatched comes from experience of the books themselves. Or rather the first one. I have to clarify here that I did read the first one as I was prompted to do so by several people, but the effect it had on me was rather the opposite of arousal. As a result I did not read the sequels. Maybe some of you reading this did and they became the greatest literary works of the modern age. If this is the case then please, feel free to educate me on this in the comments. Let us start with the history of the books. Th...

Memories of past triumph

As I approach my 30's I already seem to have a problem with memories of past triumph. I am not sure why this is exactly, but when I look back at things that I excelled at in the past I notice signs that things in the future are not all that swell. The most obvious things for me are stupid things such as not being able to drink as much as I once could. This, it turns out is a blessing. I would not say that the ability to drink excessively is exactly a triumph of one's youth, but it is a sign that my capacity for excess in any sense is dwindling already. When I look back at highlights of my life I find myself longing for those times again. A year ago I found myself looking back to the summer of 2003. This was the year I left school and received my GCSE results. I remember participating in my exams with almost photographic clarity and then the memories of taking a portable radio outside to sit in the baking sun in the mornings and dashing back inside to watch Wimbledon (the fi...

Why do we have to put a name on a relationship?

I am engaged and before I get going I want you all to know that I am very happy. I do love my fiancé very much and I can’t wait for the day that we stand there in front of everyone and make a declaration of our love. There are some things that have made me question the institution of marriage and in fact any relationship. This may be the slight feminist in me talking or just personal experience and even from things I have seen around me. I just don’t feel comfortable with certain aspects of relationships. Let us take marriage as an example first of all. There is still an expectation in the western world that the woman will take the man’s name. I do know of a case where this was the other way round as the surname of the bride was rare and so the man took this name in order to keep it going. This is very unusual and generally speaking it is the woman who takes the man’s name. This convention is a hangover from the idea that marriage is a change of ownership from one man (father)...

I love my life

Ok, I love my life at the moment. I am the luckiest woman in the world. Currently I am living with my fiance while my parents are away and things are going great. I can't wait for me and Dave to be able to move in together and really start our lives together. It is going to be amazing when we do. Then there is everything that I am doing for Luke Lucas. This is such an exciting time and I can't wait for that to all kick off properly. He is an amazing person and he has been so supportive of all the work that I have done. The thing that I love the most though is the level of support I have got from the other Crows. They have all been wonderful and they have all really got behind what I am doing for him. So I do feel like the luckiest woman in the world.
