Not all Muslims are terrorists

There are 1.6 billion Muslims in the world. Honestly, if they were all terrorists do you think any of the rest of us would be alive or living the way we are now? Seriously? There were some odd, dangerous and hurtful comments after the latest wave of attacks in Ankara, Turkey and Brussels, Belgium. All along the lines of all Muslims being terrorists or freedom of movement in the EU leading to arms and terrorists moving around too easily. This kind of comment only incites hatred and not just from the groups you would think. For a start it is totally inappropriate to use the attacks in Belgium on 22 March to make comments like ‘free movement means free movement of Kalashnikovs’, which was a wonderful comment by Nigel Farage of UKIP just moments after the news broke. Of course he is hoping that Britain comes out of the EU but when so many people lost their lives or were injured that was really not the time to make a comment like that. Totally heartless and not at all funny. Of...

'Remember, remember, the 5th of November...

Gunpowder, treason and plot.' So goes the old rhyme. This weekend there will be many a firework display (weather permitting) up and down the country, but why? In 1605 a plot was uncovered which, if successful, would have seen Parliament and King James I (VI of Scotland), blown up. The plot was to be undertaken by a rebel group of provincial Catholics who were led by Robert Catesby. The idea was to blow up the House of Lords during the State Opening on 5 November and this would kickstart revolt in the Midlands. James I's (VI's) daughter would be installed as a Catholic Head of State. The full list of plotters were: John and Christopher Wright Thomas and Robert Wintour Thomas Percy Robert Keys Thomas Bates John Grant Ambrose Rookwood Sir Everard Digby Frances Tresham Guido (Guy) Fawkes The most famous of the plotters today, after more than 400 years, is Guy Fawkes. Why is it we remember him over the others? Many of us remember building a 'Guy...

Britain First? Not if it is this lot...

Today the hate group (yes I call them that freely) Britain First posted this letter template on Facebook saying that parents should use it to get their children out of Religious Education lessons that would encourage children to join Islam or some such nonsense. I do not post this here to encourage or condone their words. In fact, my response is below. I fear that my liberal and well reasoned argument will be deleted from their page and so I post it below for you to read. I add that people are free to make up their own minds about everything and if your view is different from mine then you are entitled to it. I just hope that you will respect my view. 'Anyone who uses this is never going to solve anything. When I was at school Religious Education was only in Primary School and dealt mostly with Christianity as taught by the local Methodist and Holy Trinity churches. When I went to secondary school we had Religious Studies, which I took to GCSE level (as it was an option).  Th...

Modern Relics?

Ok, I know there is loads I could write about today such as the horrific accident on the M5 (so sad and so worrying), the stuff going on with Theresa May and immigration (oh sweet justice) and of course the Greek bail out.  I thought I would take a different route. Over the weekend a rather unusual item went on sale and made over $31,000 at auction.  This item was a tooth of John Lennon.  This may seem strange to us today, but really this is something that has been happening for hundreds of years in the form of relics. In prime locations for certain saints pilgrims would flock to the cathedrals and abbeys in order to feel closer to their sain and God.  This was a prime target for peddlers of holy relics.  There were cases of peddlers having something like 50 toe bones for sale from one saint.  This was apparently possible due to God's intervention and apparently people brought it. The main point though is not whether or not these grotesque items were ...
