Not all Muslims are terrorists
There are 1.6 billion Muslims in the world. Honestly, if
they were all terrorists do you think any of the rest of us would be alive or
living the way we are now? Seriously?
There were some odd, dangerous and hurtful comments after
the latest wave of attacks in Ankara, Turkey and Brussels, Belgium. All along
the lines of all Muslims being terrorists or freedom of movement in the EU
leading to arms and terrorists moving around too easily. This kind of comment
only incites hatred and not just from the groups you would think.
For a start it is totally inappropriate to use the attacks
in Belgium on 22 March to make comments like ‘free movement means free movement
of Kalashnikovs’, which was a wonderful comment by Nigel Farage of UKIP just
moments after the news broke. Of course he is hoping that Britain comes out of
the EU but when so many people lost their lives or were injured that was really
not the time to make a comment like that. Totally heartless and not at all
funny.
Of course there were the usual trolls like Katie Hopkins who
made comments about Belgium asking for it by allowing freedom of movement.
Luckily the people of Belgium hit back and defended Muslims on twitter after
her latest weird outburst. I wish I could put her comments down to her recent
brain surgery but sadly I can’t.
1.6 billion Muslims do not want to turn the world Muslim and
take away our freedoms. They want to live in peace and safety just like the
rest of us. They are not responsible for a handful of extremists who are taking
the name of Islam in vain for their own political and mentally unhinged agenda.
It is like saying all Christians are responsible for the shootings in Norway by
Anders Breivik.
There lies another issue too. Why is Breivik not described
as a terrorist and fundamentalist Islamic groups are? That is a bit of a
strange way to describe things if there is no consistency. When I was growing
up we were still on the dawn of the Irish Peace deal and there were still the
bombs being planted in London. Those were white Christians and they were also
described as terrorists so why have things changed?
We only lose when we give in to the groups taking the name
of religion in vain. A true Muslim lives for peace but these people are dying
for war. I refuse to be afraid and I refuse to give in to the hateful comments
that are spawned on the internet after an attack. It is said that the pen is
mightier than the sword but in the modern age of the internet, where people can
post their hateful spew anonymously, I would agree with that statement but we
are misusing its power.
