My favourite things

Image
I thought it was about time I updated my list of favourite things. Here we go: Author: Haruki Murakami. I love him so much and I have almost completed my collection of his novels. That will be my aim next pay day and then I will be on to his non-fiction works. I thoroughly recommend you read anything by him to be honest. Book: It has to be a Murakami novel to be honest and it is Norwegian Wood. I know that sounds cliche and like everyone would pick that novel because it is the one that made him a household name around the world. It was even adapted into a movie around six years ago and Murakami wasn't too happy about the explosive level of fame it bought him at the time. I love all his novels but this one keeps drawing me back to read it again and again. I can't explain it but it is so beautifully written and it is so easy to read and enjoy. It is the story of a young man as 1969 turns to 1970 and is a kind of coming of age story. One girl represents his past and one ...

Why I won't be watching 50 Shades this weekend

Well apart from the fact that I have a lovely weekend away with my darling fiancé where we are meeting good friends and having a lovely time to celebrate our 6 years together (go us) I personally have no desire to see the film. Critics have not been particularly warm towards the film adaptation of 50 Shades of Grey, the film based on the inexplicably popular female masturbatory aid book. I have to clarify here that I did read the first one as I was prompted to do so by several people, but the effect it had on me was rather the opposite of arousal. As a result I did not read the sequels. Maybe some of you reading this did and they became the greatest literary works of the modern age. If this is the case then please, feel free to educate me on this in the comments. Let us start with the history of the books. Th...

Jack the Ripper

Image
Before I begin I would like to explain that I am no expert or 'Ripperologist' I am simply interested in this case and have done very limited research into the events that follow. This is ' Jack the Ripper ' for beginners so to speak. I have even linked some websites in that should help and this is a good place to start for more information: Casebook Ever since I can remember I have had a weird obsession with 'Jack the Ripper'. In fact I know when it was. I was 11 years old and I went to the London Dungeons where there was an actor playing the part of 'Jack the Ripper'. He took us on a 'tour of London' and showed us the 'Ripper' sites. At each stop along the way he told the story of what happened to each victim. Obviously this was in a way that would make us squirm, but the real details are even worse. I was chosen to be the last victim, Mary Kelly . My body was 'mutilated' and my entrails removed. What actually happened to this ...
