Life at different paces

Image
"Life, don't talk to me about life." - Marvin the Paranoid Android - Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy That is usually what I think when people want to talk about life. We are doing this constantly on social media though. We are all shouting about our lives via tweets and Facebook statuses (especially now Facebook has made the text bigger for shorter posts). Don't worry, I am honestly as guilty as the next person for this. What effect does this have on us all though? Before I started arranging my wedding at the beginning of the year I became really aware of the number of people I knew from all areas of my life who were getting married. I think the ones from Uni were the most obvious because they were all the people around my age. For about two years before I got married I could see all these people getting married and, although I was engaged, I was really aware that I was not financially in a position to get married yet as we had not even bought a house! This m...

2016 - WTF?

2016 is a year that should be remembered for a VERY long time. There has to be a reason that it is so shit and I will try and figure it out so bear with me because I am by no means an expert, but I will give it my best shot. Death: First of all there are all the celeb deaths. We have lost some great people this year like Bowie and Rickman but actually there seem to have been more than ever before. The reason for this, as I think I have previously mentioned, is that they were all baby boomers. They all started their careers around the same time and they all lived a certain hedonistic lifestyle in their earlier years. The 70's in particular were a time of experimental drugs, booze and sex. A time when these people dying now were in their 20's and that is a time when you feel indestructible. The reality is that this behaviour can have an effect years later. That of course and we consider people in their 60's to be young nowadays because we have the ability to keep peopl...

Hay fever 2016 edition

According to reports 2016 is a particularly bad year for hay fever sufferers. This is something to do with the fact that we had a warm and wet winter and spring and it created the perfect conditions for more tree pollen. The other problem appears to be that the trees are late flowering and this has clashed with the flowers and the grass pollen. Certainly in the last few days the pollen count where I live has ranged from moderate to high. The trouble is that I only realised I had hay fever a few years ago. I had just started a new job and one of the managers was retiring. Our office had so many flowers in it we could have opened our own florists! I developed an itchy nose and throat and really gunky eyes. I developed hay fever. Since then I have noticed that I get a bad bout every other year. Apparently there are certain trees, like the Birch , that have two yearly cycles of really intense pollen and 2016 is one of those years. I have to say that this year I have been especially ba...

2016 annus horribilis

Annus horribilis - Latin for a year of disaster or misfortune. This would certainly seem to be the case as I can see it. I was going to make this blog about the high profile celebrity deaths we have seen but when I stopped to think about it I realised that there were other things that fit this category and are in need of a mention. I will come to the celebs last. I want to mention the other things first. 2016 has been described as annus horribilis in the press recently in regards to the high profile deaths but there are other events that have happened in recent months that contribute to that title. The most recent events have been the two massive earthquakes in Ecuador and the two massive ones in Japan. Both have happened over the last week and have brought wide spread destruction, death and injury to both locations. Japan had only recently marked the five years since the large earthquake and tsunami that struck in 2011 and caused death and destruction on an unprecedented scale and...

Valentine's Day or 14 February

I don't celebrate Valentine's Day because it is a sheer coincidence that my fiance and I got together on the 14 February. We were both single at the time and didn't give a flying fart so we just never thought about the actual date until a few days later. For many people Valentine's Day is a day of hell. They are either single and feel worse for seeing all the lovey dovey rubbish going on around them, have to work because they do something like waiting tables and have to see all the other couples when their loved one is at home, or they forget and their partner goes batshit crazy on them. Here are some facts about the day: Saint Valentine was a Roman saint and it has only been a day of love since the Middle Ages. There are actually around 11 other saints with the name Valentine who have saints days on different dates. There may even have been more than one Valentine who died on 14 February. It is actually impossible to say for sure who he was and what he did. Reall...

To hen or not to hen...that is the question

The first thing that Dave's brothers asked about when we announced our wedding date and that they were to take on the joint best man duties was: "where do you want your stag do?" The idea of a traditional stag of just drinking and strippers was not something that appealed to Dave. He was more about a meal and then off somewhere for a gaming night (literally video games). His various cousins and friends soon got involved and demanded trips to far off realms. The reality is that we haven't got long for this wedding and we need to think about money. That means that exotic stags are not really feasible. Dave knows all of this of course and that is why he suggested such a tame stag. I haven't even really given it much thought as to a hen do though. The traditional boozy hen do with male strippers is not something for me either. I don't see why it should be. I don't really like alcohol all that much and my maid of honour is tee-total. Why should we ever en...

The day I knew I had to treat myself better

I often treat myself like crap both mentally and physically. I know I should be nicer to myself but I can't seem to give myself a break. This dawning realisation came the other day when I managed to pull a muscle in my thigh trying to move a washing machine by myself. Rather than ask my fiance to do it or to help me do it I tried on my own. The thing was stuck to the floor and I felt useless for not being able to move it and hurting myself in the process. I am now suffering pain in that leg and have to ride it out with rest and ice treatment. That hasn't stopped me going to work though. I realised that whenever my body seems to let me down physically I beat myself up mentally. I must be weak or stupid for not being able to do something or if I have a random ache or pain I must just be weak in that muscle or something. In reality I could do with losing some weight. Don't get me wrong, I have already started losing weight since I moved into the house. I walk to and from...
