A love letter to horror Horror is just one genre I adore alongside fantasy and sci-fi, but horror has consistently been there in my life. Some of my earliest memories involve horror, or things with a horror theme. When I was born in the mid-1980's, and for a few years after, there were regular repeats of things like Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' video on TV. I also remember being shown the camp, kitsch and yet horror inspired Rocky Horror Picture Show when I was five years old. Back then I couldn't understand the story, but what I loved was the songs and the horror visuals. Even as a child I could appreciate the power of Tim Curry (Frank 'N' Furter) dressed in a dark cape with black eye shadow and dark red lipstick (like some incredible vampire figure). Like many Children I was introduced to the idea of hunting monsters through Scooby Doo. Just a few thoughts on my time watching horror films. This is the incoherent mess that comes out of my head when I over think things so enjoy this. Sex = death This is a common theme in horror films. Sex is wrong if outside of marriage like before marriage or if it is an extra-marital affair. It can be a symbol for picking up an STD. Curiosity Questioning everything, the status-quo, will get you killed in a horror film. This is a sign that to do the same in general life is dangerous and you should do as you are told. Characters are usually young There are a couple of points around this. It is tragic to see someone die young. Also these sorts of films are more likely to appeal to that age group who want to see films about people like them. There is a message that young people are inexperienced and need to learn though. As it is the season I thought I would write about my favourite horror films that I would be watching (or would like to watch) at Halloween. This is in no particular order, but these are some of my favourite horror films and films with horror elements: 1. Death Note (2006) This is a film from Japan based on the Manga. I include this in the list because the subject matter deals with supernatural beings (shinigami) and death. I think it is a horror in a sense and therefore this film fits. The live film deviates from the original story but only because some of the elements of the story wouldn't be possible in live action on a budget and also because they tried to fit the story into two films that are about two hours long each. The characters are all there though, Light, L, Misa, Ryuk and Rem. The only real complaint I have is that Misa is not a blonde. The premise is still the same though. Before I begin I would like to explain that I am no expert or 'Ripperologist' I am simply interested in this case and have done very limited research into the events that follow. This is ' Jack the Ripper ' for beginners so to speak. I have even linked some websites in that should help and this is a good place to start for more information: Casebook Ever since I can remember I have had a weird obsession with 'Jack the Ripper'. In fact I know when it was. I was 11 years old and I went to the London Dungeons where there was an actor playing the part of 'Jack the Ripper'. He took us on a 'tour of London' and showed us the 'Ripper' sites. At each stop along the way he told the story of what happened to each victim. Obviously this was in a way that would make us squirm, but the real details are even worse. I was chosen to be the last victim, Mary Kelly . My body was 'mutilated' and my entrails removed.
