2016 - WTF?

2016 is a year that should be remembered for a VERY long time. There has to be a reason that it is so shit and I will try and figure it out so bear with me because I am by no means an expert, but I will give it my best shot. Death: First of all there are all the celeb deaths. We have lost some great people this year like Bowie and Rickman but actually there seem to have been more than ever before. The reason for this, as I think I have previously mentioned, is that they were all baby boomers. They all started their careers around the same time and they all lived a certain hedonistic lifestyle in their earlier years. The 70's in particular were a time of experimental drugs, booze and sex. A time when these people dying now were in their 20's and that is a time when you feel indestructible. The reality is that this behaviour can have an effect years later. That of course and we consider people in their 60's to be young nowadays because we have the ability to keep peopl...

2016 annus horribilis

Annus horribilis - Latin for a year of disaster or misfortune. This would certainly seem to be the case as I can see it. I was going to make this blog about the high profile celebrity deaths we have seen but when I stopped to think about it I realised that there were other things that fit this category and are in need of a mention. I will come to the celebs last. I want to mention the other things first. 2016 has been described as annus horribilis in the press recently in regards to the high profile deaths but there are other events that have happened in recent months that contribute to that title. The most recent events have been the two massive earthquakes in Ecuador and the two massive ones in Japan. Both have happened over the last week and have brought wide spread destruction, death and injury to both locations. Japan had only recently marked the five years since the large earthquake and tsunami that struck in 2011 and caused death and destruction on an unprecedented scale and...

Super Injunctions pt.2

So it turns out we are allowed to say who it was now.  It was Ryan Giggs.  Amazing what you can say once someone says it in Parliament. I have to say that I am disappointed that it was Giggs.  He had the family man image, was and still is an amazing player (and is Welsh...so bonus) and he has taken years to build up his reputation.  As they say though, it takes years to build a reputation and only moments to tear it apart. Still this is going to raise more questions about the power of the 'Super Injunction' against the power of Governement.  Anything said in Parliament is supposed to be safe from the law and from the outside world.  However, with rolling coverage of everything that happens in Parliament (e.g. with the BBC Parliament channel) you can access the chamber any time you want and hear anything you want.  The MP in particular who mentioned Giggs yesterday did so to highlight a valid point.  Yes, there was a Super Injunction, but when ...

Super Injunctions

Ok, so a Scottish newspaper has printed the picture (not name, although they are obvious) of the footballer who is involved in the Super Injunction against Imogen Thomas and the press announcing who he is... Now I live in England so I will not be naming the footballer, although if you go on Twitter today you can see who it is alleged to be.  However, this is not the only thing that I will be banging on about. So what is a 'Super Injunction'?  Well, the very basic version is that it stops not only the name of someone being leaked to the papers, etc. but also the details involved in the case.  Basically, first rule of Super Injunction is: don't talk about Super Injunction. Does this new celeb craze for them undermine the notion of freedom of press?  Does anyone care that yet another footballer has been a naughty boy?  Does this affect the general public?  Well, kinda yes.  How many people look up to the likes of footballers?  Will they take th...
