Early lessons of giving up social media

What I have learned so far Ok, it is only 2 September and I only gave up social media a couple of days ago. Already I am learning some lesssons about myself and my habits and some of them are actually quite pleasant. I was surprised how quickly I would notice the difference. The full list includes being present in the moment, paying attention to the things I am doing, not feeling like I owe anyone an explanation. Lessons so far This is the list of lesssons I have learned so far and what I have discovered about them: Being present in the moment My worst habit is over thinking things that haven't happened yet. My husband said the other day that I have a bad habit of looking forward to things and then planning the next thing while I am experiencing the thing I am supposed to be doing.  My go to crutch is taking my phone everywhere (and I mean everywhere) and relying on social media for something to distract me. It is a way of killing time until I have to do something, but that is not ...

Social Media Hiatus

The time has come to say goodbye to social media...for now This year has been really crap...yeah I know that sounds obvious. For me especially so. I have lost a close family member (not to COVID-19 thankfully), my husband has also lost a family member and I have suffered two miscarriages while almost all my friends have been giving birth all over the shop. Is it any wonder that my mental health has been particularly bad of late (although as I write this I am still in the process of miscarrying for the second time). How Social Media has contributed to the problems this year Because everyone has been stuck at home there has been more reliance on technology than ever before and that includes social media. Anything to try and stay connected to other people. We are a social species after all. There was a troubling trend in social media before the pandemic though and it has changed dramatically since I was first using social media about 15 years ago. Back then it was a way of sharing silly c...

Life at different paces

Image
"Life, don't talk to me about life." - Marvin the Paranoid Android - Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy That is usually what I think when people want to talk about life. We are doing this constantly on social media though. We are all shouting about our lives via tweets and Facebook statuses (especially now Facebook has made the text bigger for shorter posts). Don't worry, I am honestly as guilty as the next person for this. What effect does this have on us all though? Before I started arranging my wedding at the beginning of the year I became really aware of the number of people I knew from all areas of my life who were getting married. I think the ones from Uni were the most obvious because they were all the people around my age. For about two years before I got married I could see all these people getting married and, although I was engaged, I was really aware that I was not financially in a position to get married yet as we had not even bought a house! This m...

ICYMI

Just a round up of things that we should all be aware of. Although if you haven't heard this stuff then you have been living under a rock. 1. Brexit is still rubbish Since the vote two weeks ago the pound is still at a 31 year low. There are now worries that the pound will reach parity with the US dollar if leaders and banks do not act fast. On top of that the people who were in charge of bringing about this economic mess have all jumped ship. Boris Johnson has decided he doesn't want to be leader of the Tories (and by extension PM). This could have something to do with the fact that he never really wanted Brexit in the first place. What Bo Jo really wanted was the PM's job with a slight majority remain so he could say he tried to bring us out of Europe but the people wanted to stay and no one likes Cameron anymore so he had to be PM but it is ok really because he can see benefits in remaining. The actual result was a shock for him and now he doesn't want to clean...

Obsessed by the numbers

So last night I am not going to lie. I became very down heartened by my cosplay. This might seem odd in light of a vlog and blog on creativity where I seemed to embrace that activity. I was looking at Instagram and there were all these amazing cosplayers who had been doing it for years and were really talented. They looked so much like the characters they were trying to bring to life and I was amazed by what I saw. Their costumes were so professional and the settings were amazing. I was in shock by it all. The other problem was that I was very tired and cranky. It was a long and very difficult day at work and I really felt low at the time. Not the best time to go checking out other people's work. When I first started cosplaying I did it for a laugh. I did it because it seemed like a fun thing to do. I just enjoyed dressing up and doing my make-up. Then I noticed that my follower count on Instagram went up and I was getting more likes for cosplay than anything else. Then I start...
