ICYMI

Just a round up of things that we should all be aware of. Although if you haven't heard this stuff then you have been living under a rock.

1. Brexit is still rubbish

Since the vote two weeks ago the pound is still at a 31 year low. There are now worries that the pound will reach parity with the US dollar if leaders and banks do not act fast.

On top of that the people who were in charge of bringing about this economic mess have all jumped ship. Boris Johnson has decided he doesn't want to be leader of the Tories (and by extension PM). This could have something to do with the fact that he never really wanted Brexit in the first place. What Bo Jo really wanted was the PM's job with a slight majority remain so he could say he tried to bring us out of Europe but the people wanted to stay and no one likes Cameron anymore so he had to be PM but it is ok really because he can see benefits in remaining. The actual result was a shock for him and now he doesn't want to clean up the mess. That job looks like it is going to Teresa May (just thankful it is unlikely to be pro-Brexit campaigner Michael Gove).

Bo Jo isn't the only one to jump ship though. The most hated man I know in my left leaning circles, Nigel Farage (who was the decendent of immigrants), has quit as leader of UKIP as he is now (as always) irrelevant. Again, he orchestrated this mess and now won't help us out of it. Oh, but in a cruel twist of ironic fate he is going to stay on as an MEP (Member of European Parliament) and draw his £80k (or thereabouts) salary and added expenses for the next two years. Thanks Nige!

The other one to jump off is David Cameron. He will remain as PM until October and then he is off. He was the first to announce his resignation and that came on the 24 June (the day after the nightmare before). Again, he was responsible for bringing the EU Referendum forward and it is his fault we are in this mess and again he goes. I think Cameron believed that his popularity would win him the Remain vote. He was wrong.

We have a local company where I live who are moving their production for Europe to the mainland because they took the message of the Brexit vote very personally and are very angry about it all. I don't blame them to be honest. They are just one of many companies saying the same things.

2. Tory leadership battle

As a result of Brexit and Cameron bailing out there is now a leadership battle. The options are not good. There was the detestable Dr Liam Fox (who luckily got a handful of votes and dropped out) and Stephen Crabb (who was linked to a company claiming to cure gays...which he now denies - but he pulled out...giggidy). That leaves the pro-Brexit bloke Michael Gove, Andera Leadsom (you can read more about her...interesting past here) and Teresa May.

As I have linked to Leadsom here all you need to know about her is she has kept a few things off of her CV that we really should know about including omitting the mention of her family's buy-to-let business and losing millions after her brother-in-law took control through an offshore company.

Teresa May is known for many things including changing the visas for students to make it more difficult for them to come here (working at a uni with a high international intake this is a pain in the arse). Some of the things she voted against include: gay rights; smoking bans; the hunting ban; promoting equality and human rights and terminally ill people being given the right to assistance to end their lives. She also voted for the Iraq war; wants a new nuclear weapons system to replace Trident; voted to reduce housing benefits and against raising welfare benefits and voted against the use of public money to create jobs for young people. This is just a short list of everything...this woman could be running the country in three months time. Yay.

Then there is Gove. He was the education minister. He wanted to cut certain books from the curriculum and make all schools academies. He also used to work in the media and was responsible for this monstrosity: A Stab in the Dark

3. Sport is happening

There has been a football tournament for the last three weeks. Euro 2016 in France which has been interesting to watch. England did appallingly and were out in the last 16 against Iceland! This is a team made up of part-timers and their coach is a full-time dentist! They beat the over paid idiots that are the England team. Both Northern Ireland and the Republic also went out in that round. Wales were through to the Quarter Finals and then nobody thought they would beat Belguim (who are something like number two in the world) and they did! Outright too! That put them in the Semi-Finals against Portugal and nobody expected them to win...so they didn't. That doesn't mean it wasn't a valiant effort. Throughout the tournament they worked hard and played well as a team and totally deserved their success. I am very proud to be part Welsh.

The other news is Wimbledon. The good news is that Novak Djokovic was knocked out in the third round! He hasn't lost in the third round of a grand slam since something like 2009! Sam Querrey from the US was the man to do the job and then he went out in the Quarter Finals but the good news is that he did it! That leaves it more open and yet more likely that Andy Murray would win this year. Murray won in 2013 and it would be wonderful to see him do it again. He just about came through against Jo-Wilfred Tsonga in five sets in the Quarter Finals and now faces Tomas Berdych (think I got that right...apologies if not spelled correctly) in the Semis. Roger Federer is on the other side of the draw and is now the most likely opponent for Murray if he can get passed Raonic.

The sad thing for me was that my two favourite tennis players are injured. Rafael Nadal didn't even participate this year. He pulled out of the French Open in May/June with a wrist injury and hasn't been able to return to play since. The latest news is he is hoping to be in tournaments within the next couple of weeks but we shall see. The other one is Kei Nishikori who had to retire from his fourth round Wimbledon match as his rib injury carries on bothering him. He had totally lost the ability to serve and had to throw in the towel in the second set against Marin Cilic. I am really hoping that the Japanese number 6 in the world will be well soon and be able to build up more points to make it to the ATP Tour Final in November as I am going to see that for my birthday. The chances of him playing on the big day are remote but you never know! I might get lucky!

4. The panty challenge

This is the worst thing in the world! It started as a hashtag on social media where women were posting photos of their clean underwear at the end of the day to prove they had no discharge. The reality is that discharge is a normal and healthy thing to have and it changes throughout your cycle. If the smell or consistency is drastically different (or if it is even non-existent) then you should be worrying and going to see a doctor. Luckily a lot of women are using the hashtag to call out the stupidity of this act.
