2016 - WTF?
2016 is a year that should be remembered for a VERY long time.
There has to be a reason that it is so shit and I will try and figure it out so bear with me because I am by no means an expert, but I will give it my best shot.
Death: First of all there are all the celeb deaths. We have lost some great people this year like Bowie and Rickman but actually there seem to have been more than ever before. The reason for this, as I think I have previously mentioned, is that they were all baby boomers. They all started their careers around the same time and they all lived a certain hedonistic lifestyle in their earlier years. The 70's in particular were a time of experimental drugs, booze and sex. A time when these people dying now were in their 20's and that is a time when you feel indestructible. The reality is that this behaviour can have an effect years later.
That of course and we consider people in their 60's to be young nowadays because we have the ability to keep people alive well in to their 80's and even beyond. When someone in their late 60's dies then we think this is tragic but what we have to remember is that really, that is quite elderly and it wasn't so long ago that this was considered a ripe old age.
There of course have been some tragically young deaths too, think Anton Yelchin and that freak car accident on his own property. That is absolutely heartbreaking (not that any death isn't) but is also adds to the list of high profile deaths this year.
Politics: This year we have seen some insane things going on politically. First of all there was Brexit. All the opinions and polls suggested that Britain would remain in the EU and we woke up the day after the vote in June to find that the seemingly unthinkable had actually happened. On top of that, today (09/11/2016) marks the day that the USA voted for a president with no experience of politics and who has a track record of his businesses collapsing, sexism, racism and is a threat to minorities and LGBTQ+ everywhere.
Now this is a personal thing of course. If you are reading this and are pro-Brexit then you are obviously going to think that Brexit is a good thing and you won't understand what I am getting at here. Sorry about that and this blog post is probably not for you. I am speaking for all the other 'leftie traitors' who voted to remain and have been in a funk about the result for the last months. The same thing goes if you are a Trump supporter, this blog is not aimed at you clearly.
Brexit led us to an unelected PM and a steadily failing economy which has had a knock on effect all around the World...and we haven't even triggered Article 50 to leave yet! Trump's election caused the Yen to collapse a bit over night (well, over night for us...it was like the middle of the day in Japan).
The best thing that happened this year in my bubble is that I got married. I do hope that anyone who shared our special day saw it as one day to forget all the bullshit going on in the World. Other than that, 2016 sucks a fuck.
