My favourite films

In no particular order and by no means the only films I like I thought I would share with you some of my favourite films. There are too many to list really so here are 10 highlights:

1. White Christmas

This is my all time favourite Christmas movie and I always watch it on Christmas Eve as it gets me in the festive mood. One of the few films that is a remake and is better than the original (see Holiday Inn). Two male entertainers take up with two female entertainers and stay in a ski lodge where there is no snow. They find out it is owned by their old commander and swear to put on a show and get people to visit the lodge so he can make some money that year. Does the snow come? What do you think?

2. Lord of the Rings - Fellowship of the Ring

I love the whole trilogy, but the first one really captured my imagination and sucked me in so it is the favourite. Frodo (a hobbit) inherits a magical golden ring from his Uncle Bilbo (The Hobbit) and finds out it is the one ring of power forged by the evil Sauron in the fires of Mount Doom. He begins a quest to return the ring to the fire and save Middle Earth. The Fellowship is forged of 9, Frodo and the other hobbits (Sam, Pippin and Merry), two men (Aragorn and Boromir), an elf (Legolas), a dwarf (Gimli) and the Wizard Gandalf the Grey. They set off, it goes tits up and they separate. That's where the first one ends.

3. Ringu (Ring)

The original Japanese horror film. The premise is that a reporter comes into contact with the 'cursed' video tape that has been killing teenagers and has one week to break the curse and (hopefully) stop the spread of the lethal video. This was terribly remade by Hollywood for no reason at all as the original is brilliant!

4. Battle Royale

Another film that Hollywood is threatening to remake (along with Death Note!) for no reason. It stars my favourite Japanese actor, Tatsuya Fujiwara as Shuya Nanahara who has 3 days to survive the Battle Royale which is part of the Battle Royale Act. The idea is that the government kidnap one class each year, put them on a remote island, give them weapons of varying degrees and make them kill one another. Shuya takes up with a girl in his class, Noriko and they meet one of the 'new' boys, Kawada, who promises to help them survive. Do they make it? Well there was a Battle Royale 2 (aka Requiem) so make up your own mind. Or you can watch this amazing film. Caused outrage in some places on release, but this is now a cult classic. Enjoy in its original form before Hollywood ruins it.

5. Rocky Horror Picture Show

A favourite for as long as I can remember. A newly engaged couple want to visit their old college professor to thank him for introducing them when they studied under him. They get lost and end up getting a puncture so walk back to a creepy castle. Inside the owner is a sex addicted mad man with a penchant for wearing women's clothes and his weird servants. The mad man has created human life (only to want to shag it really) and when he corrupts the innocent couple they soon find out he is more than what he seemed. Their professor shows up and tells them he is an alien, they perform a weird floorshow and then it all ends badly. Classic musical.

6. Rio

Brilliant animated film about a parrot who accidently ends up in Minnesota and then later travels back to Brazil to mate with the only known female of his type to save the species. All is not that simple and they get into many a scrape but end up busting an illegal bird snatching gang. Fun, funky and colourful it is a joy to watch.

7. Singin' in the Rain

The iconic scene legend says that Gene Kelly had the flu and crawled out of his sick bed to perform the dance to the title song of the movie. You would never know he was that sick when you watch it. The idea is the star of silent movies and his on screen partner are asked to start making 'talkies', only she has a terrible voice! Their first attempt is a flop and they are laughed out of the cinema until Gene Kelly's character hits on the idea to dub her voice using a woman he has recently met who can sing and speak like an angel. Their characters fall in love and the farce is exposed, leaving her famous, the irritating woman without work and Gene Kelly's character realising the importance of true love.

8. Calamity Jane

I love this because my middle name is Jane. It is a fun musical starring Doris Day as Calamity Jane who is the only woman in a small town in the west of America. A new woman comes to town as a performer and the two live together as it would be unseemly for a woman to live anywhere else. She makes Calamity Jane into a lady and both of them fall in love with men in the town. A fun time is had by all and slapstick is the nature of the day.

9. Back to the Future

A time travel comedy starring Michael J Fox as hapless teen, Marty McFly who accidently travels back in time from 1985 to 1955, kisses his own mum and has to ensure his existence by getting his parents together at the school dance. All the time he is dealing with his own bullies at school and his dad's in 1955. A modern classic.

10. Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back

More advanced than the first and with a bigger budget this was the highlight of the original trilogy. Luke Skywalker starts to become a Jedi and Leia and Han discover their true feelings for one another while still fighting the evil Empire which was not brought to its knees after the destruction of the Death Star after all. Meanwhile...who is Luke's father?
