My tribute to Christopher Hitchens

The great man who once called Mother Theresa an "Albanian Dwarf" after accusing her of using money raised to build convents in her name, has died from Pneumonia as a complication of his Oesophigal Cancer.

Hitchens was never afraid to speak his mind on any topic including the war in Iraq (he was for it when many were coming out against it), George W Bush (called him unintelligent and proud of it) and even fell out with his own brother over different political stances (although they were later reconciled).  One of his most famous events was taking on Tony Blair about the role of religion in politics.  Needless to say, Hitchens came out the better of the two.

He had a great many friends among the great thinkers of the day including Prof Richard Dawkins (fellow athiest) and writer Ian McEwan (who was there at his death).

Some called him a philosopher, but he was better described as a polemist.  He was the most fervent atheist and blamed all troubles through history on religion.  He was also not frightened to offend religions when expressing his views.

Hitchens like to live to excess, including drink and his relationships after becoming radicalised in the 1960s.

In the end he became a US citizen in 2007 and ended his days a writer for Vanity Fair.

The world has lost a great thinker and writer and more importantly someone with the balls to say what he was really thinking about any subject you could ask him.
