My Room 101

Ok, so 'Room 101' is a reference to the torture room in Orwell's famous work '1984' about a society which has every aspect of its life under surveillance and documents are re-written to keep the public controlled. 'Big Brother' is watching your every move and the 'Thought Police' are coming for you if you deviate in any way (and you might not consciously realise you had deviated). We are heading that way as the Government in the UK would like to do away with the European Human Rights and would like to monitor all electronic communication in real time. Scary stuff. Still, that is a diversion...for now. 'Room 101' is the place your ultimate nightmare exists to break your spirit.

Since the show that started in the 1990s on the BBC the idea has become one where you can deposit your pet hates. In that spirit, here are mine.

Facebook 'share this' items. If you are on Facebook you will have encountered these at some point. They run along the lines of 'share this to fight cancer', 'share this so [insert name here] can have an operation', 'share this if you think being cruel to animals is wrong'. Of course we want to cure cancer and want so-and-so to have their op and of course being cruel to anything is wrong, but sharing a post on Facebook is not going to do anything about these issues. If you want to help then donate to charity or volunteer or something along those lines. Do something that will make a difference, because believe me, this will not. It is just a load of 'clickbaiters' trying to get a rise. Oh, and think about the origins of something before you post it. Remember, if it comes from Britain First it will have NO basis in fact at all. If it comes from The Onion it is deliberately false as it is a parody/satirical website.

People who don't put lights on in the rain. Sorry, I can't see you when it is peeing it down (regular in Britain) and your lights would be useful about now. Same goes for people who don't indicate when turning or who break and then indicate. It is mirror, signal, manoeuvre.

Hay-fever. This is self-explanatory. It ruins Spring and Summer for me.

People who don't overtake cyclists when it is safe to do so and just sit there holding the traffic up. I know many cyclists and they hate this too. They would like you to over take when it is safe to as they feel more vulnerable with you sat behind them. At least that is what they have told me.

People who use incorrect pronouns when referring to transgender people. I have some trans friends and they would prefer it if people would ask them once for clarification than repeatedly get it wrong. Plus, some people prefer to use non-binary and there is no harm in ever asking.

Use of words such as 'there', 'their' and 'they're'. I see this all the time and here are the definitions to help you out a bit:

  • 'There' - as in a place ("we went to Japan and it is lovely there"). Also used to focus attention ("look at that spot over there")
  • 'Their' - possession. As in belonging to someone (their house was lovely).
  • 'They're' - really two words in one (hence the apostrophe). Split it up and it says 'they' and 'are'. Think about that when writing it out in future.
People who make light of self-harming or do it for a stupid reason. I got so angry at the #cutfor1D thing I saw. Don't provoke people to self-harm and don't do it because your favourite boy band member left. I know people who self-harm and it is really hard to get across to others just why they do this and what negative effect the stupid posts can have on their daily recovery. Self-harm is often connected to mental health issues and there is nothing to joke about here. They are illnesses in their own rights and should be taken seriously so think before you post something stupid about it on social media.

Wasps. These are just evil. They sting for no reason and some are parasitic to other insects and just horrible!

MCM London. I bloody love Comic Con but why are they always at the end of May and the end of October? They are always about two days before pay day and that means I can't ever spend money there. I always get my ticket and train paid for in advance and then I wander round in cosplay trying to look cool but really just crying on the inside that I can't afford that yaoi manga or that wig or that mochi from the Japanese food stalls.
